Background & Experience
Hi I'm Neil! I'm a saxophone player, composer, teacher and bandleader active in Chicago since 2016. Music is and has been my passion for my entire life.
I've been playing saxophone for 22 years, and have played with countless bands in the Chicago area––most notably leading my own jazz/rock horn band New Nostalgia, which has released 2 records and numerous singles since forming in 2017. I've taught for over 10 years, and while most of my experience has been with high schoolers I believe the fundamental skills of a good teacher––relating to the student, giving them the space to explore, being honest and supportive––cuts across all ages.
If you decide to try a lesson with me, our first lesson will be me learning about you: your experience on your instrument, your favorite music to listen to and play, and most importantly, what your goals are. This is different for everyone––if you're a middle/high schooler, you may want to sound better in band; or maybe you're preparing for college auditions; or perhaps you just want to learn your favorite songs from TikTok. If you're an adult student, maybe you are rediscovering music after a long break, or looking for an escape from the monotony of the daily grind.
Your goals will help me figure out the best path for you, and how to structure lessons. I have a very friendly and casual personality, and I work hard to create a relaxed environment in lessons. If you're interested in setting up a lesson, give me a call or send me an email!
