Kurt is an accomplished drummer and percussionist in several musical genres. He holds a degree in Jazz Performance from the world-renowned Indiana University School of Music. He received the Kenny Arnoff Drumset Scholarship, the AW Mason Award, and the Undergraduate Dean’s Award during his time at Indiana. Since moving to Chicago, he has been a versatile player in the music scene, backing up performers such as Straight No Chaser, Blue Moon Revue, Jerome Holloway and has played with jazz greats like Frank Catalano, Richie Cole, Ben Sidran, and Melvin Rhyne. He has composed music for short films and theatre, as well as recording music for the Steppenwolf Theatre’s Tony winning play August Osage County.
In 2006, Kurt established his private lesson studio in the north suburbs of Chicago. He teaches upwards of 30 middle and high school age students weekly. His students have been recognized at numerous middle school and high school contest and festivals. Kurt is the percussion instructor at Glenbrook North High School and has taught percussion sectionals, master classes, and group lessons at such places as; Mary Murphy Middle School (Winnetka, IL), Our Lady of Peace Elementary and Middle School (Glenview, IL), David Adler Cultural Center (Libertyville, IL), Merit School of Music (Chicago, IL), and Wood Oaks Middle School (Northbrook IL). He has also served as an adjudicator for IMEA District I Senior Auditions. Kurt is an active member of both the Percussive Arts Society (PAS) and the Jazz Educator’s Network (JEN).
