Robert Barris, a native of Detroit, is a former member of the Dallas and Detroit Symphony Orchestras. He is a frequent performer with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philomusica, the Chicago Sinfonietta, the Joffrey Ballet, the Lake Forest Symphony, and the Ars Viva Orchestra. He has performed as soloist and chamber musician in Austria, France, Switzerland, Germany, England, China, Australia, New Zealand and nearly each of the United States. He is active in the commercial recording studios of Chicago and has performed on commercials for McDonalds, Disney, All-State, and many others. He recently retired from Northwestern University where he was the bassoon professor for twenty-three years, as well as Co-Chair of the Music Performance Department. Currently teaching at DePaul University, he has also served on the faculties of Central Michigan University, the University of Michigan and the Interlochen Arts Academy. His students have been members of many outstanding orchestras and university faculties, including the Boston Symphony, the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony, the Indianapolis Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony, the Toronto Symphony, the Sydney (Australia) Symphony, North Texas University, Kent State University, Boston University, Baylor University, the University of Nebraska, Western Michigan University, and many others. He has served as Vice-President of the International Double Reed Society and has hosted their annual Conference. He is founder and owner of Broken Winds, LLC, a bassoon sales and repair company. In his spare time Bob enjoys reading, motorcycling and cooking, and is a Democratic Party precinct chairman. He and his wife Joan have two grown children and two dogs.
